In just a few days fashion week begins in New York. You may be wondering what fashion has to do with graphic design, so I’ll explain. In high school, I took three years of fashion marketing. We studied the fashions, the designers, the advertisements, the magazines, and once a year, in December, we took a trip to Manhattan. Amongst our to-do lists, aside from a week of shopping, was to meet with designers, analyze store displays, and even predict what would hit the runways in February’s fashion week.
Long story short, all this was the original spark in my design career, though at the time I never would have imagined it. I thought for sure I’d end up being a fashion designer or working for a fashion magazine. While there are obvious differences between fashion design and graphic design, there are still the basic principles of design. And with events as huge as design week (though you may need to be into fashion to understand the hype) why not use all that color and glam as inspiration for your own design.
The September fashion week runs Sept. 9 – Sept 16 this year. Being that it is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz this year, you may see it referred to as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. You can keep up with it all here: Website, Twitter, Facebook
Even if fashion isn’t really your thing, you may want to keep an eye on it. Fashion trends affect more than you’d probably imagine so it certainly doesn’t hurt to get a sneak peek at what to expect.
